About Me

My name is Rachel Cullen and I have been exploring health, fitness and nutrition for the last 10 years, and am on a never-ending journey to understand the human body. I started running and practicing yoga on my own during high school in Cochrane, Alberta. During my undergraduate years at the University of Calgary, I expanded my yoga education to include new forms of yoga such as Hatha and Hot Yoga and eventually found my favorite with Ashtanga yoga. I was also a regular runner, frequently putting in hours at the track around the Olympic Oval to battle that infamous freshman fifteen!

After University I struggled with maintaining a consistent fitness program, playing recreational ultimate frisbee and doing the occasional workout or going for the odd run. My fitness regime was inconsistent at best and my waistline and fitness level paid the price for it.

When I went back to the University of Calgary to complete my Master of Science degree in Geography, I reconnected with Ashtanga yoga and become a dedicated 5-day/week mysore student. This led me to complete a teacher training program to further develop my own practice and explore the teaching side of yoga.

Back in the Calgary corporate world after completing my Masters Degree, I fell off the yoga wagon and completely lost my fitness footing. Instead of practising yoga every day, I started consuming chai lattes and white chocolate cranberry cookies during the daily 2:00 pm lull of the corporate jungle. This resulted in me gaining 10 lbs in under 6 months and a harsh wake-up call when I saw a picture of myself in a bikini in the summer of 2010. Deciding that I didn’t want the scale to continue to rise, I signed up for a gym membership and started counting calories to recalibrate my brain to what a proper portion size was.

I am happy to say that only 6 months later I was down 30 lbs, putting me 10 lbs less than I was even in high school and feeling fantastic. But I stalled out and couldn’t get the last few inches of belly bulge to move for the next 6 months. Being an intellectual at heart, I decided that I wanted to understand why I was stuck at this plateau, which led me to a personal training course.

This opened my eyes to a never-ending realm of educational opportunities and ignited my desire to take what I had learned through my personal experiences and help others to reach their goals. I now follow a functional approach to fitness and have moved away from counting calories to embracing natural nutrition. I am in the best shape of my life and feel better than I ever thought possible. I can’t wait to help you get to the same healthy and inspiring place!
